MCA #0, Sunday Afternoon

Well, yesterday was a thing. A whole entire thing. And Danny was not happy about any of it.

So, after doing the thing he'd done for weeks when he first arrived, he spent his morning trying the causeway to follow after Steve again to no avail. Hence being back at the apartment to stress bake.

It was this or have an anxiety attack over the level of unknowns and he thought his shrink would prefer this, honestly.

Once she'd caught the radio broadcast (after washing her hair with a jug of water, ugh the days when things came out of the taps were the worst), Annie had debated with herself on whether she wanted to check on Danny and Steve given this whole Afghanistan thing, or whether it was none of her business and they had it handled.

Ultimately, Sunday-afternoon boredom coupled with the hope that Danny might be cooking something won out, and she headed downstairs to knock on their door. Maybe it would be nothing and she'd get to hear a fun story about an explosion or mutant spiders again.

"Hi," Annie replied, stepping in. "This place looks suspiciously un-glittered, given the cannon situation." Though she did appreciate that the reindeer seemed to be sticking around.

Also, no Steve? But maybe he was just out?

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2020-12-13 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sort of. Mostly I was just bored and seeing if you guys were around," Annie admitted, a little concern creeping in. "Where's Steve?"

It was actually more worrisome to her that Danny was here, if Steve had gone to Afghanistan. But she was probably being dumb, and he was just off torturing the troopers or something.
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - worried about you)

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2020-12-13 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"So he actually went," Annie sighed, following obediently. "I heard the radio - I wasn't sure...like, if it was something he had to do right away or not. What's in Afghanistan? If you can say, I mean."
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - serious)

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2020-12-13 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"Whatever you're having's great," Annie decided, taking a seat at the kitchen table and resting her chin in her hands. "This doesn't sound good."

She was kind of an expert in running off to do stupid things, herself, but that didn't mean Annie couldn't appreciate that it didn't always leave the people behind in a great position.
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - what the hell?)

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2020-12-13 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"Steve has a girlfriend?" Yeah, Annie was going to get stuck there for a second. "I didn't know that. He's never mentioned her."

But then, why would he have? Just because he and Danny acted like the most married people Annie had ever met, that didn't actually have to mean anything. Steve could have a girlfriend, sure.

Though, that being said, Annie was a lot less accepting of this girlfriend if she had to do with this scary Afghanistan thing.
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - bad news)

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2020-12-13 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Do you know what kind of help?" Annie wondered. "I mean, clearly...the in-person kind."

Probably the dangerous kind.
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - real talk)

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2020-12-13 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, shit." Yeah, Annie was going to go ahead and have some of that wine, because - seriously, oh, shit.

She paused, thinking about that for a second, then cut her eyes over to Danny. "Are you okay?"

Seeing as how he was here, and not in Afghanistan. Annie knew she'd be climbing the walls with worry, if it were her.
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - assessing the situation)

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2020-12-13 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"The - stuck thing?" she guessed, her frown deepening. "And I take it Steve hasn't gotten in touch."

He was probably kind of busy. Didn't help with the worry, though.
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - in profile)

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2020-12-13 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's only been a day," Annie said gently. Only a day here, anyway. "Does this happen a lot?" The Hawaiian explosions and kidnappings and drug smugglers had already seemed like enough to deal with.
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - leaning over someone)

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2020-12-13 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"He's tough, Danny. He'll be okay." Annie just kind of needed to say that out loud so she could hear it, too. "And you know where he went, and with who. That's something, right?"
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - looking down)

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2020-12-13 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"Vent away," Annie assured him quickly, shaking her head. "Just because he's a brave idiot doesn't mean it's okay, or that it's fair to you. Do you - is Catherine...trustworthy?"

Just because of that comment about Steve trusting people.
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - your story made me sad)

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2020-12-13 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"This is a lot to ask of anyone," Annie supplied quietly. "Not just of Steve." Who, again, also had Annie's sympathy considering the number of times she'd run off into danger and left her mother or a teammate behind to worry. "It must be impossibly frustrating, though."
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - am i sad again? probably)

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2020-12-13 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's very admirable," Annie agreed. "But I think I've given my mom literally all her gray hairs doing exactly that, myself. It's not easy not knowing what's happening."
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - thinking)

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2020-12-14 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
"It also doesn't matter if he's done worse - it doesn't change that this is still dangerous," Annie pointed out with a firm little shake of her head. "Though the lack of back-up is...especially not great."
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - looking off)

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2020-12-14 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Can I help?" Annie was not usually great in a kitchen, but it seemed like the hard part was done. And plus it seemed like the more distractions, the better.
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - considering)

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2020-12-14 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
They did sound fancy, but part of that was also that Annie's cookie education was pretty sorely lacking. Blame her mother and her fear of all things sugar and butter.

"You make all these different types of cookies every year?" she asked, already dutifully rolling up her sleeves. "I usually count myself lucky if I find someone who made those peanut butter things with the Hershey's kiss in the middle."

"I like being 'other people,' then," Annie decided with a smile. "What kind is Grace's favorite?"

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2020-12-14 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Coco like chocolate or coco like coconut?" Annie had to ask, being a huge fan of both.

"That sounds like it should be illegal." Also seriously yes, getting added to Annie's Big List of Reasons to Visit Hawaii. "I can count on one hand the number of times I've had a cream puff and I really need to increase my quota, especially if there's potential for chocolate pudding."

"Okay, donuts are like, my weakness. Don't tell anyone." Annie was only half-kidding. "How can they possibly be better?"

Poor girl had also never had a beignet.

"When I was a kid, there was like, absolutely no junk food allowed in our house - my mom's kind of a tyrant about weight gain. But my dad would sneak me out and take me to Dunkin' just about every week," Annie shared, just slightly wistful. "So, like, I'm not gonna call myself a donut connoisseur or anything but - big fan of all things fried dough, at least."

"There's already a whole list of things I don't tell my mom about this place, but cream cheese dough might have to go to the top." Though Annie was pretty sure that was the greatest thing she'd ever heard of, and it showed.

The connection was staticky and awful. "Danny?"

[personal profile] grenadesandohana 2020-12-13 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
She couldn't hear him either, if that helped!

Which it didn't.

"Danny, are you there?"

"They've got him," came the staticky, unhelpful reply as Catherine hid behind a tree.

"The Taliban," Catherine said because she wasn't entirely sure how much Steve had shared with Danny. She guessed the answer was always "more than she'd prefer", but she wasn't sure, and now wasn't the time to be coy. "I need you to get in touch with Joe White. Tell him Omar Hassan is alive and that there's a Taliban compound in the Panjshir Valley. I'm pretty sure that's where they're taking Steve." She took a break to catch her breath as Amir's village came into view. Twelve klicks was a long way to run. "Do you have a pen?"
grenadesandohana: (x cath)

[personal profile] grenadesandohana 2020-12-13 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"All right," Catherine said. "The coordinates of the compound are three-four, two-eight, niner North, seven-zero, two-two, three-one East. Repeat it back to me."
grenadesandohana: (x cath)

[personal profile] grenadesandohana 2020-12-13 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, yeah I'm all right," she said, sounding distracted as she caught sight of pickup trucks racing into the village and angry Pashto being shouted. "I gotta go, Danny. Get a hold of Joe, okay?"

Because a Navy SEAL in the hands of the Taliban was bad.

"Gotta go," Catherine said, voice a staticky whisper, and then the phone disconnected.

Enjoy your weekend, Danny!
