With just barely enough time to rest up after the stuff in Annie's version of New York, Danny had finally gotten a response to his inquiries into Marco Reyes from a buddy in the DEA.

Which meant Steve had somehow managed to wrangle a military transport to get them there, which Danny would be forever grateful for even as the trip left him with more and more if a pit in his stomach.

Nothing about this could end well. Absolutely nothing about it.

[for the partner canon typical violence and murder]

After Cath's phonecall, Danny had used that guaranteed portal thingy from 'Santa' to get back home in time to both contact Joe White and raise enough of a stink with Naval command using every tiny fraction of leverage he'd earned on Five-0 to get himself put on a military transport out to Afghanistan.

Which, on the multiple hour long trip with some moderately confused soldiers, he'd started to think might have been a bad idea. But they'd taken his Intel at face value (probably because of Joe) and Steve had been rescued from a situation that made Danny's stomach clench and breathing become difficult if he thought about it for any length of time.

And there'd been plenty of time while he waited to be allowed to see him in the infirmary. Thank God he was still Steve's primary emergency contact.

Well, yesterday was a thing. A whole entire thing. And Danny was not happy about any of it.

So, after doing the thing he'd done for weeks when he first arrived, he spent his morning trying the causeway to follow after Steve again to no avail. Hence being back at the apartment to stress bake.

It was this or have an anxiety attack over the level of unknowns and he thought his shrink would prefer this, honestly.

[open! any thread set before the phone call]

Since it had happened via the beach chairs, and Steve was getting weird about potentially leaving them behind, they were back at where they'd been stashed on the beach of Fandom.

Which they found had been turned into a sort of porg condominium. Because porgs.

And so, once that had been cleared up, Danny and Steve had settled back onto the chairs. It hadn't seemed to take that long, but shortly after that, it was dark out. But also, the ocean was different. And there was the sound of the party they'd been yanked away from weeks ago filtered down toward them. Because they were back on O'ahu, thank god.

Steve beamed. "Hey, look at that. Think there's any beer left?"

Danny shot him a look and shook his head like he couldn't believe Steve was being Steve about all this. Even if it was a very nice constant to depend on.

Things had mostly settled into a sort of normal in the weeks since they'd been back on O'ahu. You know. For whatever passed as normal for their jobs. A no more phone calls from The Devil. No more space ships level normal. That was all that Danny asked for and that was what he got here.

As long as Jerry wasn't around. Because he just knew Jerry had some opinions about UFOs.

What wasn't normal was getting called to Grace's school for a disciplinary meeting with the Principal over something Grace was being accused of doing. He knew his little girl well enough to know that this was probably some straight up bullshit.

Steve had graciously come along for Danny's routine attempt to get off the island in order to go see his kid. It was perfectly routine until the fact that Danny found himself in a bustling arrivals terminal of McCarran International Airport.

Without Steve.

He dug out his phone to dial, only to find it already ringing with Steve's name on the screen.

"I'm in Vegas," Danny said because normal greetings were for people who didn't freaking travel through portals.

"Oh, hey, it kind of worked," Steve said. "I'm back at Hickam. At least Vegas isn't Fandom?"

Danny let his judgmental silence be all the response necessary at that. Because it was still Vegas. Even if Grace was there too. "I'll call you as soon as Grace and I land in O'ahu. Try not to get into trouble before then."

Because now, at least, they could safely fall back into old habits. Yes, he was a sweet summer child concerning Fandom's nature.

"No promises," Steve said, laughing. "But I'll pick up some coco puffs. See you at the office. I'm gonna show Jerry my pictures from Jupiter."

He wasn't, really, but he wanted to wind Danny up.

Because that was just how Steve functioned! And showed his love. "Steven McGarrett, I swear to god--"

"Sorry, you're breaking up, Danno," Steve said through a perfectly clear connection. "Tell Gracie I say hi." And then he hung up.

Danny huffed in annoyance, shoving the phone in his pocket. "Tell her yourself," he muttered under his breath, searching out where the nearest exit was so he could go hug his kid and pretend all that weirdness never happened.

Like any sane person would.
