The last few weeks had brought on a lot of new tings (comparatively speaking) for Boc, from having a new employee at the store that was also a half-beastie like himself (albeit much different), to taking a class that some of his other employees signed him up for. So when he came into the shop, he was very firm about sticking with something familiar and certain.

Well.

Firm for Boc.

Which meant that he'd protested slightly, but still wound up trying some new summer-y pastry that had at the shop in addition to his usual cinnamon roll.

Ah, well. It was delicious, though, so he wasn't going to complain.

(Not outloud anyway).

Good morning, everyone! It is I, Miss Lydia Bennet, here to bring you yesterday's tidings, now with many fewer giant lizards than last week! I am sure we are all quite relieved.

We begin with the school, where Relax and Chill learned about meditation, and surely no naps were had. Galactic Tourism visited Ilum, where it was cold but apparently quite beautiful, and First Aid learned what to do if you cut a body part off with one of those sabres made of light...or anything else, for that matter. Please no one do that any time soon. And...the rest of my notes seem to be missing. I've nothing for the dormitory, nor for the town. I do hope some of you did something yesterday, and it is merely the notes that are misplaced. Perhaps they are with Leroy, wherever he may be. Well. Now that you know that classes happened, I am off to get a cup of tea. Farewell, dear listeners!

"Hello, everybody!" Lana was dressed for the cold, and she had handwavily advised you to be as well, but she also had a few long coats for those who might not have their own.

"Today we're going to a planet that I personally find lovely, but that's a bit cold." The portal opened, and she led them into the mouth of a cave from which they could see a night-time sky full of stars and nebulae, with meteors streaking down every now and again. Under that sky were giant crystal ridges thrusting up over a snowy landscape.

If they turned around to look into the cave, it was every bit as spectacular, with glowing crystals of green, blue, and purple clustered all over.

"Welcome to Ilum," Lana said, smiling. "This is where most of the Jedi of my day get their lightsaber crystals. I think you can see why. It's also just beautiful in its own right. As long as you stay away from the contested zones. We're far away from of those today, don't worry."

She nodded toward the outside. "Feel free to explore, but don't go too far. And if you see a wild tauntaun, don't approach it; they can be very territorial." They'd kill you faster than a wampa. Ask me how I know. "And if you want to cut a crystal off, please ask someone who knows what they're doing." She gestured to herself and Jack (if he was here).

"Otherwise, I thought I'd have a bit of coffee and just enjoy the view. Feel free to join me." She'd brought an entire picnic service of the stuff, courtesy of the Perk.

Today the room had a very wide assortment of pillows and blankets at the ready for the class to continue the fine tradition of comfy. And things purloined from other classes.

Both of those.

"Today we're going to work on meditation," Jane said. "Which isn't just napping. Mostly."

"Or so they claim." Cara was very much #TeamNap.

"We'll go over some suggestions for how to start and then get right into it," Jane said. So many naps would happen, huh?

All the naps. "Remember, it's all about breathing. Or something."

Good morning, everyone, it's Captain Steve Rogers with yesterday's news.

Let's start with classes! Belle was in the library supervising gremlins making a collage. It's important to embrace your creative side. Ethical Dilemmas had our first hypothetical question, and if you weren't in the class, well, you should've taken it to know what the question was. We visited St. Louis and saw the Arch in our National Parks class. Philosophy of Food discussed what foods were better served at a dinner party versus a picnic, and The Art of Breakfast learned all about eggs: I prefer mine sunny side-up, which Tony thinks is entirely too perky an order for the morning.

In town, Stewart was playing music at Groovy Tunes, a good place for it, Luma was inspecting Pixie Dust's nail polish inventory, and Prompto delivered Jello and sympathy for Liz's never-ending reports at the Photo Hut. Steph was prepping for a new game release at Magpie Emporium, the Supper Club went out for sushi, Thor was serving mint juleps at the Devil's Nest...does he know that the Kentucky Der--

Oh, good, he knows.

And that's everything for yesterday! Have a great today!

There were gremlins making a collage today.

Belle just hoped they weren't using any papers they shouldn't be. Surely all of those magazines hadn't come from the shelves? And the books they were using seemed to have been discarded. She wasn't sure why they felt the need to cut up so many of the brand new bookmarks but it was best to let relatively calm gremlins lie.

Belle would be shelving and keeping an eye on things.

I think the Kentucky Derby already happened, Don said from what Thor was beginning to think of as his seat.

Lydia had been rather...surprised, let's go with surprised by Sushi Station on the Supper Club's previous visit, but she knew what to expect now and she was sure that there was something that had been cooked on the menu. Somewhere. And who knew, maybe she would develop an appreciation for raw fish yet! So she had girded herself and decided it was time for the Supper Club's second visit.

She would be asking some questions before ordering anything this time, that was for sure.

Welcome to Supper Club, everyone! Sushi Station is open!

"Okay, guys," Raiden said, "today we're gonna learn about eggs! A critical part of the American breakfast experience, eggs are tasty and packed with protein. Apparently protein is very hot right now. And they're so versatile! There are dozens of things you can do with eggs, but we're gonna stick to the basics today. Do you like your eggs scrambled, fried, boiled, or poached? Time to find out! Don't be like Julia Roberts in Runaway Bride and eat your eggs however your boyfriend likes them. Have your own opinions on eggs. And everything else." Wise words, Raiden. Wise words.

Raiden proceeded to talk the students through how to do each method, plus the difference between sunny-side-up and over easy, or soft boiled versus hard boiled. "Now it's your turn! Pick a way to cook your eggs, and make it happen!" he encouraged them. "And if it turns out not to be your favorite, try something else!"

No, he's very worrying, but I'm not worried about Leroy.

He knows what he did.

Up at the School, things were again quiet in the Library, while Shenanigans involved a lot of smile. Because Anakin did in fact take teh advice of tiny children in designing this. Minglers mingled. While Voluntolds prepared themselves, including the two Steves, seeking out their respective teammates Luma and Summer. Not that you can really prepare yourselves for this amount of slime. There was trivia under ominous buckets, rearranging things with your face, and waffles.

The Dorms were still quiet, while in Town, Prompto's hopes of a quiet morning at Furnado were dashed by attempted bird escapes, while at Pick Your Poison Adrian was doing some kind of star maths. Caritas had a pool party theme, though thankfully no actual pools, full of Jello or otherwise were in evidence. Atton's zombieclone auditioned for the band, while Stark was highly dubious about the cheeseburger shot. As he should be.

Stewart didn't know why he'd woken up with 'Don't Bring Me Down' stuck in his head that morning, but he did know it was super annoying, and when was the last time he'd even listened to something like the Animals? He blamed the stereo in the store, probably inadvertently earworming him while he wasn't paying attention, but he did wonder if there was some potential remixing possibilities there. So he was squinting at his laptop a little as he loaded up a few files to play with and fought the urge to just blend it with some ELO, in lieu of doing any actual work.

What? Like there was just so much work to do around here, anyway? Pffft. Come on.

Coming to the store to work after her class was actually a really nice choice in her scheduling that Luma was going to have to pat herself on the back for, because that meant, no matter what happened in that particular class, which seemed like it was going to be rife with stress and misunderstandings for her, she could just come straight to Pixie Dust afterwards and marvel at all the clothes and pretty things and maybe even treat herself to something if it was particularly rough.

Today, though, she was browsing through the nail polishes to pick one out for her to use. Sure, the moment she wanted to use her claws, she would ruin the work, but there was just something about a flash of color whenever she moved her hand that really appealed to her, and the thought of perhaps trying to paint her claws, too, had definitely crossed her mind.

For now, though? A nice dusky rose, she felt, was a good one.

Pixie Dust is open!

After not having much energy last week, Liz was feeling a bit better and wanted to try and make the most of her morning and get as much work done as she could. Her main focus was trying to get the last of the end of month reports done and get as far ahead as as she could while she was feeling better. In between the general paperwork, Liz was also taking the time to catch up on some emails that still needed to be answered so it was proving to be a rather busy morning.

It wasn't every week that a fairly high-profile brand new TTRPG system officially released, and Steph had been pretty busy the last couple of days fielding inquiries and taking table reservations for groups looking to check it out, not to mention distributing all the preorders she'd been holding.

Also she was putting up a special display of loose d12s, since those happened to be central to the system. It was kind of nice to see them getting love from people who weren't playing barbarians for once.

[OOC: Open! Subject to SP as always. I am sad I can't pick up my preordered copy until this weekend, wah.]

The Danger Shop this week had been programmed in two halves - on one side, there was a formal dining room with fine china and silver. On the other, a neat blanket was spread out over grass, with a well-crafted wicker basket in the middle. The dishes there were sturdier and the silverware plainer.

Hannibal stood at a table between the two halves in a lovely summer suit.

He straightened up and nodded at the students. "This week, we're not talking about food; we're talking about how other things relate to food." He waved between the two halves of the classroom. "What sorts of food does each of these settings demand? What sorts of conversation and manners? What culture do you expect of each?"

He gestured at the table behind him, which held all the food. "Take some food, and sit where you like to eat it; move between the two, if you like. But think about this - when you choose your food and seat, is it only because of taste? Or is there a reason you prefer one over the other? What behavior do you feel is warranted in each place? What is most appropriate and most comfortable? Let us discuss it."

Once again, Sam had his class assemble outside Portalocity.

“Today we shall be traveling to St. Louis” he said. “In Missouri! To Gateway Arch National Park, the smallest National Park! Come along, through the portal, quickly now.”

Because it took so long to get this very large class through a portal, obviously.

Once everyone was assembled with a view of the arch itself, Sam began to speak again.

“This park was established in 1935 as the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. To celebrate westward expansion! It was given its current name in 2018. If you would like to learn more, and I recommend you do, there is an entire museum to visit! You can also, of course, ride a tram to the top of the arch.” And back down again, too!

“I also recommend visiting the Old Courthouse. A building of much historical import!”

“Please, explore the park. Do not venture into the city itself. If you miss the return portal you will be on your own.”

Sam would absolutely leave you here. Without hesitation.

Ethical Dilemmas, Thursday, (Per 1)

Considering everybody knew where to meet and how to get there, Liliana didn't offer the several minute's grace she had last week, starting her lecture at nine am exactly. People were welcome to continue to help themselves to breakfast, of course - there were mini-omelettes in bacon cups, vegetarian mini-omelettes, mini quiche bites, hashbrown bites, and a variety of breakfast crostinis available for the hungry, courtesy of Ignis, as Liliana certainly didn't cook - but she was going to continue lecturing while they did.

"So, today, we have our first ethical dilemma," Liliana said. "It's taken from the short story Those Who Walk Away From Omelas. This story opens upon Omelas, a wonderful society where there is no hunger, no violence, no kings, no gods, no masters. They are not a simple people, they have advanced technologies, they've cured common diseases, they have art and literature and science, and are sophisticated as any of us. But, more than anything else, they are happy. Comfortable. All children are loved and wanted, all consenting relationships are celebrated, every person is cherished, living not a life of pointless luxury, but joyful abundance. Scarcity does not exist here.

Those who walk away... )

The end of her lecture, she sat back and looked at the class. "So, today's ethical dilemma is a simple question: go or stay? Do you stay and participate in mindful happiness, or are you one of the ones who walks away? Answer that and prepare to defend your choice--but. Remember my rules. You are answering for this exact scenario only. You cannot stay and work to free the child, or tear the city down brick by brick. if you leave, you do not get to return with an army, or declare you're going to one of the surrounding towns. "Go forth, alone and into darkness, or stay and participate in society. Those are your only two options."

[Hey, head's up! Under the cut is part of the text of TWWAFO, specifically extreme neglect and abuse of a child. Be safe!]
