The funeral for Matty had, of course, been closed casket. And it had been full of cops (all former coworker's of Danny's) and firefighters (all former coworker's of his father) so it was easy to not have to address anything emotionally at the time.

Though Grace being there with him had caused more than a few cracks to come through as he just tried to get through this period.

Which was possibly why he was laying in one of bedrooms in the home that he and his siblings had grown up in, staring at the ceiling, trying to will himself to sleep. Even though he knew he'd have nightmares there.

Well, it was a partnership, even if it wasn't in the way their therapist, the governor, and half the people who knew them were assuming. Steve would happily--eagerly--take the weight Danny couldn't carry right now, repaid in the warmth he got from knowing that Danny trusted him enough to be this vulnerable.

Steve moved his head--he'd say it was to get away from Danny's hair--and brushed a kiss to the top of Danny's head.

Steve did enjoy being the protector, it was true. And they took turns in that, damn it. It was why their partnership worked.

Danny sighed, closing his eyes to just enjoy the physical comfort of being held here.

Steve dug his thumb in a little harder to get that pressure point to unknot.

It would help Danny relax, right?

Oh yeah, that would help.

Danny let out of those slightly louder noises from the first night before he was clamping down on it with an unintentional press forward and a tight clutch at Steve's shirt. A shirt that was on because of a severe lack of self control on Danny's part before.

"Shhh," Steve soothed. "I've got you. Need me to stop?"

Steven McGarrett, that wasn't fair at all to ask him right now.

Danny shook his head, not wanting Steve to go back to the air mattress tonight.

Steve gave him a tiny smile and pulled Danny back down against him (and slightly riding his leg but it was a twin bed and there was a lot of legs between them. It was fine. Completely fine!) "If your okay, then I'm okay," he said.

Fine and normal coworker stuff!

"Just," Danny started before forcing himself to relax. "Stay." With him, he did not say. "I don't want to think about it tonight."

"I'm not going anywhere," Steve promised, making eye contact that lingered a little too long.

Which was the right thing to say to get Danny to actually relax against him, even as he kept that eye contact for much too long as well. Maybe if they stopped putting themselves into this sort of position, it wouldn't be an issue, but there they were again.

Steve gradually went back to the back rub, trying to soothe Danny into dropping off.

Yes. Very soothing, that back rub.

Okay, it was. But it was also causing those aborted noises that probably haunted Steve forever.

Steve was just...trying to ignore the noises while also memorizing the noises, and kept giving Danny the back rub.

He was a very complicated man, okay.

He really, really was. Also, continued to be a glutton for punishment. Because now Danny was basically melting against him, having no trouble tangling their legs even further.

Steve was not going to begrudge Danny a single thing he wanted or needed tonight. He kept his hand moving and waited to see what Danny did next.

That right there was dangerous. Because what Danny wanted was to not think about his brother or Marco Reyes or any of it tonight.

And Steve was an all too tempting distraction. Especially now that he knew what it was like.

He let out a long sigh, rubbing his cheek against the soft fabric of the t-shirt Steve was wearing. That was probably one of Danny's.

It was definitely one of Danny's and was now pretty stretched out, so sorry about that.

Steve's hand drifted down to cup Danny's cheek for just a heartbeat before going back to rubbing Danny's back.

And if his hand had moved Danny's shirt slightly out of the way, well. These things happen.

Danny looked up at that, stretching out against him until his forehead was just barely touching Steve's and he was practically breathing the same air as him.

Steve took that invitation for what he hoped it was and closed the distance between them with a kiss.

They could only dance around it for so long before it all spilled out. For now.

Danny kissed him back, so eager to just be able to focus on this feeling for the night.

Steve let out a low sigh and pulled Danny all the way on top of him, kissing him fiercely and trying to drive any other thought--grief, regret--right out of Danny's head.

Danny did his best to help Steve with that on such a narrow bed, causing the old thing to creak faintly in protest. Which made him stop moving so much, but not pull away.

"I need," Danny murmured, unsure how he would finish that before the first word was even out of his mouth.

"Tell me," Steve replied, watching Danny's face intently. "Anything."

"I need you to be in charge." Wow, that took a lot of effort to come out of him. "Right now."

Just for the night.

Steve felt that sort of request in his bones because he knew how it felt to just be done with having to make another decision that day.

He nodded and kissed Danny again, slow and soft in deference to the old, squeaky bed. And because he felt that Danny needed something slow and soft.
